Today Ruby Hornet unleashed Volume 2 of their now infamous Closed Sessions series. It should be no secret that Ruby Hornet and Soundscape Studios have put together some epic collaborations. This tape continues that trend with features from L.E.P. Bogus Boys, Vic Mensa, Donnis, Vonnegutt, Ninjasonik and so many more. An album release party was held tonight at Reggies. Check out a visual from Ali's upcoming LP "Mounring in America and Dreaming in Color" which is set to drop September 18th. This track is an aggressive, politically and religiously charged cut like only Brother Ali could deliver.
This is the title track to my new album, Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color. The first half of the album highlights and critiques the dire situation in which we live. The second half outlines the tremendous opportunity we have to re-imagine and reform our society. This song is an observation and a critique of our culture of death and murder. From actual war zones around the world to our own inner cities where this summer's death rates rival war zones. I also address our national hypocrisy regarding violence. We have a zero tolerance policy of violence committed against us, but we're a lot more lenient and patient when it comes to the violence we commit. "A life is a life and a killer is a killer".
Directed By Xavier Ruffin
Look for Gerald at Abbey Pub October 4th!
Produced by Taylor Gang’s Cardo, the song is yet another feel good banger from Gerald’s latest mixtape, “Believers Never Die,” that has gained over 80,000 views and nearly 10,000 downloads on mixtape hub datpiff.com.
I know Pavy, but this is the first i've heard from his label mate Mr. Gage. Pretty smooth cut and Pavy assists with an ILL verse. Definitely worth keeping an eye on this guy.

New EP... I guess?! Its been a while since i've heard anything from Chicago's DK, so I suppose a 2 track EP is better than nothing. Good stuff though, check it out! Hit the jump for the download.
Outside highlights the idea that a lot of artists (regardless of the medium) claim to lock themselves in the studio all day everyday; however, if that were actually true they would run out of experiences to touch on within their work. Their output would only represent the thoughts of being in a studio all day everyday. We must go outside for inspiration. I have a hard time with relevance sometimes because I get caught up in the unique content of each and every song that I create, as well as how those individual songs will fit into a bigger project. I found that I have to go outside and experience life so my content won't go stale. I can't lock myself in a studio all day everyday. I wouldn't write about anything worthwhile. I need to be inspired by discovering new things on a daily basis. Outside embodies this idea as well as the realizations I've had since moving to Chicago in 2009. My mind has been opened to so much since then. I feel as though I'm finally outside, and encourage others to find this clarity as well.

Chi-Town don't like nobody. Twista? F*ck that n*gga. But if somebody touch him its on, he's Chi-Town, we love that n*gga.Another new visual from Twista's "Reloaded" hosted by Don Cannon. Twista hits the streets for this one and addresses the violence that has plagued our city. A lot of people talkin' but not a lot of actions. I applaud those that acknowledge the problem and seek change. "Reloaded" drops September 4th, get that!
Chicago collective, Supreme Regime, consists of 6 members ranging from rappers, producers and photographer/videographers. The team has the potential to be self sufficient, and shows off those talents in this latest visual for their producer's instrumental.
The homie Banks lets go of his second release from his forthcoming solo project, "Rico Suave". In addition to playing a number of shows, filming videos and prepping his new album, Banks still makes time to make new music with his group, The InteLLects. Still not the best as far as interviewing skills, but better than Sosa's. Out of all GBE hype, I really think that Lil Reese ends up being the long term success. This is just me speaking my own opinion, but I don't see the Chief Keef phenomenon being around for years to come. This trap sound is the flavor of the week, but they are going to have to keep it fresh if they want to stay relevant.

Some out of town noise here. Couldn't pass on this though, the Detroit native crazy with this one over an Illmind beat.
In this new video for the song “Leave Me Alone”, Detroit artist Ty Farris has used these visuals as a platform to expose the conditions of a city suffering from a severe crack epidemic and the unfortunate socio-political problems it endures. The concept of the video, which is directed by Gregory Edwards and Corey Martin as Rose City Cinema, is to contrast the luxurious life of downtown Detroit with the poverty stricken streets of the rest of the city. “Leave Me Alone”, produced by Illmind, is a cut off of Ty Farris’ recent mixtape Champion Hoodies N Hennessy, which has become a highly praised project not only in Detroit, but also in many streets across the nation. He has used this mixtape as a stage to display the state of affairs in Detroit: no glitz, no glam, just the streets, and this video isn’t exempt of that. As it starts off with the words “Deadtroit” and “Proceed or Die” spray-painted on a wall, it’s a very bold visual for a very dire situation the city of Detroit has fallen victim to.
Last weeks offering in Kidd Russell's new freestyle series.

Go behind the scenes for the summer of Mikey Rocks. "Lap of Lux" is out now! In this episode, Sir Michael Rocks performs alongside Three 6 Mafia at their show at the Metro earlier this summer. Best show i've been to in a long while, Three 6 Mafia was bananas.
These two Chi emcees have caught my attention quickly with both their solo and collaborative singles. The buzz around "V12 Muzik" has been pretty big, so I thought I should probably start sharing. Hit the jump for the tracklist and download and let me know what you think.
Chi DJ Duo has been working this summer! Lots of new mixes and dope originals. Floss performed at West Fest earlier this summer and they were allegedly banned from playing anymore festivals for fear of causing a riot. First of all, if your music can start riots, good for you, that's f*cking awesome. Was bummed they weren't on the Mad Decent lineup, but in retrospect that didn't really matter because the Mad Decent Block Party was shut down anyway because of a riot essentially. Irony at its best. Catch "Chicago Summer" on Trinity's latest, "The City is Ours".
This song is one that I wrote venting about the high murder rate in my city. Myself and Griffen wrote it from our real life point of views. I worked with APJ Films to create a visual that would spark convo about the violence in the city. I wanted to create Time Magazine like images of the everyday people in my neighbor holding the Chicago flag to represent the divergence between the people and the police.
To follow up Elishua's "For What Is Next" Freebie, Savier drops his "My Queen, My World". Don't be fooled tho, this is no love song. TwoLetterz dropped off a short, but ILL interlude from his upcoming tape "Chasing Dead People Vol. 3". This isn't the last of the leaks, as the homie released some artwork earlier today for a track called "Ain't No Way". This cut is very jazzy and has a spoken word type delivery, I dig it. Chicago rapper/producer sticks to rhyming on this new project alongside a relatively unknown young North Carolina producer. Hit the jump for their five track offering. For the record, I love the year of the 5 track EP. Staying consistent by working with one producer over the course of an entire project generally allows the tracks to flow nicely in one comprehensive work.
Not the first time these two have worked together, I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped a full project together. Complete speculation on my part, but I could mess with that. DC to Drillinois.

So many prospective success stories being written in Chicago right now. The 2008igities' Julian Malone is one of several artists I'm keeping a a close eye on. With so many new local emcees popping up, it may be hard to stand out, but Julian is doing just that.

Cool recap from St. Millie's listening party at Jugrnaut recently. The Chicago artist premiered his upcoming project, "No Religion But Up", to a number of fans that gathered at the local streetwear boutique. If you are old and don't have the internet (you're probably not reading this anyway), the streetwear scene in Chicago is one of the best spots to learn about up and coming talent from the area. Every time I swing into Jugrnaut, i'm always picking up whatever free tapes they have to offer. I'm one of those old heads that appreciates the physical copy. I wasn't in attendance at this event, but the tracks in the video sound great and I look forward to the project's September 10th release.

Many may have never heard the name TwoLetterz, but in the last month the young Chicago emcee has performed his first show and released a hot single featuring one of the city's most notable lyricists. At 20 years old, Donnell Fields aka TwoLetterz has taken his craft seriously and people have recognized his effort nationally.
I was introduced to Donnell only months ago when he submitted some leaks from his "Harolds Chikken" EP. I noticed he was a Chicago artist and I try to support my city's local music culture, so I listened, I liked it and wanted to hear more. Donnell's flow is something that goes against the grain when compared to the Trap sound that has put Chicago on the map as 2012's hip-hop hot spot. Following in the footsteps of lyrical locals like Kayne, Lupe, Common and Add-2, when Twoletterz records a track, he always has a message to deliver.
I kept in touch with TwoLetterz and would often get texts letting me know what he's working on, or thinking about putting together. I enjoyed seeing his creative process unfold, and was quick to ask him to perform at GoILL.net's very first event at Tonic Room in Lincoln Park last month. TwoLetterz took the stage like he had been performing in front of people for years. He interacted with the crowd well and definitely got people's attention with his acapella abilities.
With his new album on the way soon, I wanted to hear what this "up and coming" emcee was all about and why I'm just hearing his music now. Last week I had a chance to talk with Twoletterz about everything from his origin story to his new album. Hit the Jump for the full interview and keep your eyes peeled for "Chasing Dead People Vol. 3".
